Eco Village for Sale! – edgewood village

I am deeply suspicious of anything that has the preposition “eco” attached to it, and am only slightly less wary of its prepositional sibling “green”. Ever since conservation and environmentally responsible movements started gaining traction, and politicians and lawmakers have been forced to listen (albeit in a desultory and sly sort of way), the machinery of corporate greed has ramped up the language – not to say the actions – of green-washing and eco-punting. Eco-eating. The table is set for a green lunch. The sad fact is that there is a belief that if you slap the preposition “eco” in front of any word or phrase that in its unencumbered form actually describes or implies an activity that is likely to be harmful to the natural environment it will somehow mitigate that harm....

Tiptoe Falls in Portola Redwoods State Park – 120 park avenue

One of my hiking goals this year is to visit as many parks as I can to see waterfalls.  In the last few years, there has been so little rain that many of the waterfalls have not been flowing.  So, I decided to start out at a new park that I haven’t visited before.  Portola Redwoods State Park is in La Honda in the Santa Cruz mountains near Palo Alto.  The drive there was a bit tricky because highway 35 is partially closed due to winter storm damage so I had to take a different route to get there.  The storms over this past winter have affected many of the parks as well.  2 of the trails that I was planning to hike today were closed, so I had to modify my hikes. One of the highlights of my hike was Tiptoe Falls.  I started at the visitor center and...

The Ultimate Waterfall Hike – green mountain water and sanitation

I am continuing my mission to hike to as many waterfalls as possible this summer and this is the ultimate – Big Basin State Park, Berry Falls loop hike! I have put off this hike partly because it’s so long, 11 miles round trip and I need to get to the park early to start. So, I picked a Wednesday because the crowds would be lighter. This hike is in my 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles book by Jane Huber. My goal is to complete all of these hikes eventually! So far I’ve done 18, long way to go… Starting at the ranger station like usual and paid my fee and started in the direction that the ranger pointed, there were 2 trail closures marked on my map but it didn’t really affect my plan.  There were surprisingly quite a few other hikers along the way, this was a popular hike. I start...
